I used this guide for a short trip to Warsaw and Krakow and it was just what I need. I tried e-reader guides for a while but I honestly find them frustrating to use on the road and prefer print guides, so if you are only visiting Warsaw & Krakow (or Gdansk), this is pretty much perfect because it is compact vs. a full Poland guide. You get everything you expect from Rick Steves - a comprehensive guide for people who like to do things themselves: a sufficient write-up on Poland's communist past, little tidbits (i.e how Milk Bars work) and tons of honest feedback on where to spend my time, with accompanying information and often fun little tidbits like the mystery of Warsaw's one single palm tree or where to find the best paczki.
I usually use Frommers/Fodors but this one covered the three cities we visited. I really like his method-maps out walks, highlights to see, good places to eat and stay that are for non-Ritz Carlton travelers, nor backpackers in hostels-just plain folks who are value conscious. The maps are very good, even better than the maps in each city from the tourist info places in some cases. Good recommendations for sight seeing and places off the beaten path. In Krakow we went to Nova Huta and found his description to be perfect. I will look for his books in the future.
While there is little or no information here that is not available online for free, buying the book saves you the trouble of gathering everything from disparate sites, and it's nice to have it all with you (especially the maps) as you explore. A good 10-dollar investment.
great book for newbieski's going to visit 3 of the most beautiful cities in the world, Poland is such a wonderful country and has been treated so poorly it's time more people especially from the USA go there. This book is a great start, by the way most Poles speak English and are so polite and friendly the world should take note; and it's easy to get around, the food is terrific and the countryside a painting; the cities full of great cafes, shops and history
I purchased this book to read up on Krakow and Warsaw prior to going, and took it with me as well. It was perfect and loaded with good information. As I was on a tour, much of the independent recommendations were not needed, but the information on each of the cities and surrounding areas was spot on. There were five us on the tour and two others had the very same book. I guess we all thought it was the best one available for these two cities and we were right. I highly recommend that if you are going to either Krakow, Warsaw, or Gdansk, that you invest in this book.
Rick Steves is awesome and we've used his books all over Europe! He gives you behind the scenes and details you can't get without paying a ton of money for tours. For do it yourselfers, his books are the best!
This book is full of useful information and covers everything including travel to and from the airport, ideas for lodging, things to see and do, and where to eat.
Great information. Only thing I would recommend is adding the walking guide to the map like Rick Steves books normally do.
