The guide is much lighter in weight than previous guides in the series. Unfortunately, the photographs contained in the book do not reproduce well on the lighter paper resulting in lack of detail and color shifts. One of the reasons for purchasing books in this series was for the quality photographs which are no more. The information contained in this book lists many small towns but gives the reader little clue as to what attractions or towns are more worthy of seeing. There is little practical information necessary to plan a trip and surprisingly, very little on the culture. It can not be used alone in planning a trip and without the quality photos, it can not serve as a good souvenir of sites visited on the trip. You will need to buy another guide to properly plan the trip, making this book superfluous.
Im really disappointed that they took away the glossy pages. Honestly, one of the main reasons I purchased DK Eyewitness guides over Loney Planet etc was BECAUSE of the glossy pages. Please bring these back. I hate feeling like I’m reading a newspaper when I’m researching trips.
I have been reading most of the Ireland travel books (from the library) in prep for an upcoming trip. I was just reading the 'Eyewitness Guide Back Roads, Ireland' which is a very helpful book but sadly, is not avail. on Kindle. So I just ordered the Kindle version of this book and am VERY disappointed! Very little info. Sort of like the Cliff Notes of the Back Roads book. Gives 2 itinerary options, 2 weeks for all of Ireland and 7 days on Wild Atlantic Coast. It's sorted by region, but only covers a few towns, giving cursory paragraph or two on the highlights. It does not offer recommendations of places to stay or eat. MAY offer one choice for a small selection of towns and it is generally not an inexpensive option. For example, does not offer ANY options for Killarney or Dingle. It does provide links to Google Maps and to websites for the attractions. Will not be useful as a travel book. So far I have purchased the Kindle of 'Fodor's Essential Ireland' and the paper copy of Rick Steves. I'm so glad I didn't pay more than $1.99 for this one!
I went to Ireland some years back and would have had far less fun had I not had this guide with me! It is great for planning day-trips as well as negotiating the land in general. It is color-coded by area and easily gotten through as a result. Recommendations for restaurants and accommodations are solid. In my opinion, an indispensable tool for touring Ireland! I was pleased to buy it for my nephew who is making his first trip over. He'll be well-equipped!
What's happened to this quality book series? We no longer have these stunningly beautiful pictures. Instead you get faded images on poor quality paper. Gentlemen and ladies at DK - What's happened?
