If you are looking to make your training materials better without opting for - say - Articulate Storyline (which is great), then opting for Power Point is a good enough choice. This book can serve as a bridge between the basic use of Power Point and the huge guides that are available. It gets right to the point and tells you the basic approaches to using the software to training design advantage. If you are using an older version of Power Point you might want to purchase the older version of this book. This volume does orient the reader to key differences in the new version and the older versions of Power Point that relate to e-learning design.
I pre-ordered Better Than Bullet Points because a preview of the contents seemed to fit my needs of creating engaging online courses. The book more than lived up to expectations; it is simply excellent in presenting its central thesis--"transform" your PowerPoint presentation, don't simply "transfer" it online and declare it a learning tool.I have several well respected books on elearning, but their encyclopedic presentation is overwhelming. Jane's book is very well focused, flows topic to topic very naturally and logically, and most importantly, is substantive without dumbing down. And while she covers some PowerPoint techniques, the focus stays on pedagogy and field-tested design. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get their first elearning program right the time. This is your user's manual.
I agree with everything the other reviewers have said to date. This well-written book (lots of active voice) is useful to anyone involved in training; chapter 2 takes Bloom's taxonomy to a very realtistc and pragmatic level that guides the reader to the most appropriate learning activities. I just finished a master program in distance education and I wish I had had this book in school. Bozarth's interpretations of Roger Mayer's principles of multimedia made more sense to me now than when I read Mayer's book in grad school. Not at all overly academic; very application-based on what most of us learned in school, but needed help in using the theories. Highly recommended.Margaret Driscoll's "Web-Based Training: Designing e-Learning Experiences" with CD-ROM would make a great companion book to this one for anyone creating e-learning in a variety of delivery formats.
First, the book and accompanying CD are clear and offer lots of practical examples in how to use the powers of PowerPoint. You can open the book to almost any page and learn something new. The examples really helped me understand what to do and not to do in building eLearning tools.Second, i want to thank Amazon's SPEEDY replacement of the CD so i could continue working a project.
This is a great book for the trainer who needs to create a quality rapid elearning product but doesn't have the time or budget for expensive tools. Ms. Bozarth really knows the program and she has some great tips on how to create compelling animations and engaging content. Team this up with the tools from Wondershare and you will be able to create some amazing elearning.
This is a great book for understanding the fundamentals of e-learning design, as well as seeing how a user-friendly presentation tool, PowerPoint, can be used for getting started with e-learning. The book has a nice mix of theory and practical advice and examples. I recently recommended the book to some soft-skills trainers who were just starting to think about putting some of their face-to-face instruction online. This book was perfect for them because they are skilled and experienced facilitators, but not designers, of learning.
This book is excellent for people who use Power Point a great deal and give many presentations. It is definitely a good resource to help improve the typical presentation. I also helps teach about the learning process and why the presentations are more beneficial in this format.
The ideas in this book are quite wonderful. It makes the presentation interactive and keeps the student's interest at higher levels. It's far beyond most Powerpoint books that simply go through the rote page setup and themes approach. This will help us greatly in our courses.
