Ok, if your a Manson collector of course you have to have this, but otherwise it is not even a good read, let alone Manson's words.Buy it if you are collecting, but read Helter Skelter or the Family for a better read.

Let me begin this review by saying that I am not a Manson follower. I am a pretty average Jane, but I am fascinated by cult leaders and the methods they use to attract and retain their followers. This book, told from Manson's point of view, is surprisingly honest, but it is a long from a "tell-all" book where Manson takes responsibility for his misdeeds. I recommend it for people who have heard the story only from Bugliosi's "Helter Skelter," which tells Manson's story using the murders and the trials as the primary focal points. This book tells more about Manson, as a boy and as a man, and how he became a widely covered cult leader.

Parts of this book seem a bit self-serving, but I suppose that's to be expected. I was discharged from the Army right after the murders that led to Manson's notoriety and have read most of the books and seen the movie, Helter Skelter. Consequently, this account makes perfect sense to me. I can't imagine what it would be like to live a life like he has.

I really was fascinated with Manson's life. I read everything I could find on the murders at the time and watched the updates on the trial in the news.I was surprised to know he had a relationship with his mother. I thought he was abandoned when born and didn't know her. I felt he was honest in his telling of the story (what does he have to loose by lying at this point).

So far so great, I'm only a quarter through. But had to comment here because I bought the Kindle version and it's missing page 161. How the heck do you forget a whole page?? 5 stars for the writing and the story itself, I'm completely sucked into the book. But knocking a star cause I have no idea what happens when he gets back from the desert.

A really different insight to Manson. Manson the man rather than Manson the demon.

This book takes you beyond what Helter Skelter did and gives insight into Charles Mansion in many of his own words. Very well writte with the author's insights included

I was somewhat reluctant to purchase this book because I didn't want to help glorify Manson in anyway. However, I found it irresistable not to know what Manson's version was of those two nights of senseless slaughter in August, 1969. I was shocked to learn that after 32 years, Manson continues to claim he didn't order the murders at all--it was "the girl's idea", he simply "went along with it". Incredible! Poor ole Charlie, apparantly, HE was the one who was brainwashed!Manson does not disappoint! He comes across as being just as crazy as most people imagine him to be. It's really scary to hear him try to justify his actions. He takes no responsibility for anything and claims society made him what he is. He offers absolutely no remorse for the brutal murders and has no sympathy for the families of the victims.I gave this book a 4 star rating because I do believe Manson told the truth--the truth as his sick, twisted mind believes the truth to be. This look into the mind of a monster is chilling, but almost as chilling is the fact that there are still people out there today who think he is some kind of hero and truly believe that what he and his "family" did on those two hot, summer nights in 1969 was "cool".

When I first decided to this book I thought it would be another "not me I didn't do it" book. When in fact he does admit to being responsible. In reading this you can see just how intelligent he really is, it's so sad he didn't put to good instead of bad. You can almost and I say that hesitantly see how a young person with a tarnished background could fall for all his fast talking. This a very disturbing book to read.
