I am an Oxford Club Chairman's Circle member and am approaching retirement. I generally like Marc's work for the Oxford Club and thought his book Get Rich With Dividends was great. This book, however, is disappointing. It is pretty thin and has a very "rushed" feel to it, sort of like it was published to meet a deadline rather than when it was really ready. There's a lot of good information in here, but, as other reviewers have said, not a lot that is new. Also, a lot of the advice is not very practical. I question, for example, how many people are going to get into peer to peer lending or investing in tax liens. For the hassle (and risk) involved in those two ideas, I would rather just keep working. There are some other shortcomings. For example, Marc gives the familiar pitch against whole life insurance. That is not necessarily bad advice for someone in their twenties. But I would assume the audience for this book are folks in their fifties or older who are almost certainly not going to be buying whole life insurance even if they could qualify for it. What I would have liked to have seen is an intelligent discussion of what to do with whole life policies if you have them. How do you maximize their value if you have been paying into them for thirty years. He also goes off on annuities. Again, that is probably good advice, but it would be helpful to cover what to do with an annuity if you have one. Also, what alternatives exist to generating safe, reliable income if annuities are a bad option? All that said, there is some good advice here on social security, discounts, etc. And he is definitely right about getting liability insurance if you drive for Uber! All said, I expected more.
If you receive emails from Oxford Club, or have any email subscriptions with any of the numerous cross-marketing "partnerships" that have anything to do with Oxford Club, or maybe you've fallen prey to the marketing scheme/gimmick/onslaughts from the Oxford Club, then you've heard this all before. Skip the book completely.A smart man once told me, "Don't believe anything you hear, and only half of what you see." That advice right there is better than anything you'll find in this book. The only exception to that is the section on HSAs.
I like Marc's other book "Get Rich With Dividends" better as I knew about 90% of what he was writing about in this book. If you don't know anything about saving, investing, etc. for retirement, then this book may be helpful to you.
Good book. Marc is a smart guy and does a good job of explaining things. I do believe the system he lays out is a good one for a lot of people, but did not fit into my situation.
This book was easy to read and did educate me on some things I did not know. That being said, there was not a lot of earth shattering information you couldn’t pick up some where else.
Good and easy read. If someone is not familiar with investing concepts, it is very good. If you experienced, a good reminder on what you should be doing- stay the course.
I love a practical book and this is it. There are strategies you can use immediately and information that is presented in an easy to understand manner. To get even more benefit from Marc's advice be sure to read his other books on dividend investing, "Get Rich with Dividends."
Well written and well researched. A very good reference.
