Very engaging. Gives me alot of insight about the Pureland
A wonderful book about Pure Land buddhism written by the great Dharma Master Yong Hua.
This is a real gem to those who want to learn and understand BuddhismI have been practicing chan meditation under dharma master Yong hua for a few years now and it has helped me being a better person and transformed the most difficult parts in my life. He teaches his students but asks nothing in return. I think its important that the writer writes with wisdom, not knowledge from other people's words. When a writer has wisdom to write this type of book, it provides more authentic and clear answers to the readers. And it won't spread delusion.
This short book provides an introduction to the Pure Land Dharma door for complete beginners. Indeed I was a complete beginner when I read it and as such found its very simple and straight forward approach very accessible.What I particularly liked about this book was that Master Yong Hua is totally uncompromising in rejecting modernist interpretations of Amitabha as a "metaphor" completely devoid of objective reality. This is not to say that the Master does not express a nuanced understanding or grasp of Mahayana metaphysics. He clearly does (this particularly clear in the books back matter). However, he deftly avoids getting bogged down in excessively elaborate formulations which may confuse or lose some seekers.Indeed, any later study into the metaphysical principles of Buddhism is predicated on accepting the transcendent and supranatural in Buddhism. Master Yong Hua emphasizes the concrete and true nature of Amitabha as a transcendent being. He refuses to submit to Western distortions of the Dharma and, as already stated, this is invaluable in my view.A note of caution however. For Western readers coming from a materialistic background, some of the statements in this book may seem fantastical and even superstitious. Indeed, they did to me when I first read this. However, I would encourage such readers to approach the text with an open mind. If it is helpful to such readers to initially take such statements as metaphorical, then so be it.A final word for readers, this book approach Pure Land from the mixed Chan/Pure Land School which predominates in the East Asian mainland, as opposed to the exclusive Pure Land associated with the followers of the Shandao-Honen line of patriarchs. As such, this book should be viewed as a companion piece to Master Yong Hua's "Chan Handbook". I would encourage those interested to read them in combination.Namo AmituofoðŸ™
